Celebrating Hispanic and Latin Music - A playlist for Hispanic Heritage month

Every year Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 – October 15 in the United States. We celebrate the culture, achievements, and influence of Hispanic and Latin Americans to the nation’s history and diversity. During this time, you will see Hispanic flags attached to cars, vendors selling colorful homemade crafts, and an abundance of festivals where cultural music is performed live. People both inside and outside the Hispanic community are welcomed to gather and enjoy all the wonderful aspects of the culture.

Most importantly, Hispanic and Latin music reflects how time, traditions, and certain environments have molded our people’s lives and created connections. Growing up Hispanic, there was no escaping the music. In every Mexican grocery store, laundry mat, and kitchen on cleaning day, I memorized every word to iconic songs such as Luis Miguel’s “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” and Maná’s “Mariposa Traicionera.” If you’re part of the community, you have heard these songs at least 10 times and could not get them out of your head. A common charactertisic is formed between the community of not being able to escape your mom’s favorite music videos playing while the floor is being swept.

Past greats such as Selena Quintanilla, Juan Gabriel, Jenni Rivera, and Vicente Fernández have left amazing discographies that the Hispanic and Latines still enjoy remembering their legacy. These musicians allowed current artists to express their culture through the shared love of music. Now, artists such as Bad Bunny, The Marías, and Cuco have a place to share their talent in the public eye. New generations are witnessing members of their own community break through the music industry and become influential representatives of their respective groups.

Explore and indulge this playlist that follows music from past and current Hispanic and Latin artists. From Spanish rock to cumbia and alternative, there is something for everyone to enjoy. These songs were chosen by me and fellow Hispanic and Latine UWM students!
