Having been a band since 2023 My Melody’s debut EP “Silent Angel” comes to Milwaukee with a well developed technical fusion that checks all the boxes for a modern alt-rock record.

The six track EP sits at a little over twenty minutes long and effortlessly weaves through each track with the grace of a feather. As a whole “Silent Angel” exists at the center of multiple genres paddling through a sea of sound to redefine itself in every track. Influences wade in from shoegaze, slowcore and math-rock making for a sonically dynamic change between each song.

However, the foundation holds strong between Kidd Starck on guitar, Tommy Curtis on baritone guitar and Oli Smith on drums. The trio has locked in their dynamics well, with each member holding their weight in the soundscape and never getting lost. As a whole the three piece created a sublime alt-rock record, but “Silent Angel” really shines in the details. My Melody isn’t reinventing the wheel, but they’re polishing it well.

Opening with the title track that manifests a darker tone, but the rhythm changes and tempo shifts keep the listener writhing in their seat. The gritty guitar tones paired with the high strung and hollow calls of “silent angel” backed by a head banging instrumentation makes for a catchy tune.

Nico Robin and Wasted All My Youth further this balancing act that is shaky in a good way. The band leaves the listener waiting for more, with every second having the capacity to dramatically change throughout this record. It takes a certain confidence in an artist’s ability to transform foundational elements of a piece at a whim and My Melody does it well.

The band sits at this throughline of alt-rock history calling back to Jerry Joiner’s genius with Girlfriends back in the late 2000s, but also sitting neatly with contemporaries like Oogwe. The bounce back between two different forms of math-rock pairs well with My Melody sonically. It captures the non-descript catharsis from moving one’s body to keep up with a staggered rhythm. Not to mention that the band plays without a bassist making the rhythmic changes so much more remarkable and Smith’s skill as a drummer that much more impressive.

The final track Visions of Death is a standout hit that thrashes between harshly thumping tones and a bright melody. It constantly marches forward through incalculable notes that are impossible to hear and not start moving. My Melody captures the emotional poignancy of not writing music in a “standard” manner, instead letting their influences and sonic proclivities push their path forward.

“Silent Angel” can be streamed on any streaming platforms or you can support the band directly via Bandcamp. The band is also holding an EP release show, Saturday Oct. 25 at Kadish Park, the show starts at 4 p.m., with Human Ant Farm and In Shining Armour opening.
