Nine Inch Nails Show Review

Nine Inch Nails is not just a band your parents used to listen to in the 90’s. This battle tested industrial rock group played the Fiserv on Monday, 2/23 to an eclectic crowd of Gen X to Gen Z.

Even before the band took the stage, the opener, Boys Noise rocked the house with a DJ set that set the tone perfectly, building energy with a mixture of synth and drum patterns.

As the time grew closer to 9pm, more and more people packed the arena. The music reflects this as the sound shifts from classic house to industrial electronic. The show was set up in two covered stages with smoke filling the room and red light setting the mood. The center stage was revealed, as Trent Reznor began playing Something I Can Never Have from their debut album, Pretty Hate Machine. Reznor plays piano as slowly the main stage is revealed and the band each joins in to round out the song.

The band moved to the main stage and the show commenced. The sound switches from mainly electronic to classic industrial rock. The stage set included a smoke screen and projected lines and sound waves, with strobe lights to enhance the look. They also used a spotlight controlled by hand to create a silhouette effect. To further enhance this, they used a clear screen going around the stage to create a better sense of reality.

The band played well known hits as well as deep cuts to the crowd’s delight. Trent moved to the smaller stage and began to play a mini TRON Ares concert with Boys Noise joining the stage. The interlude ended with the smash hit, Closer from the album Downward Spiral.

Reznor joined the band back on the main stage to finish out the rest of the show with the standout tracks being Head Like a Hole and Mr Self Destruct. My personal favorite was a David Bowie cover I’m Afraid of Americans that Nine Inch Nails did a remix of in 1995.

The show ended abruptly with no encore, but honestly it wasn’t needed. It was a great show and fans went home happy. For a guy whose lyrics consist of hating everything…he sure does love his audience.
